Area, Perimeter and Volume
Year 6 calculate perimeter, area of rectangles and volume of cuboids.
# Area, Perimeter and Volume
In Year 6 geometry we measure the size of flat shapes and solid objects.
Perimeter
The perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape. For a rectangle, add the four sides together, or use the rule two times length plus two times width. Perimeter is measured in length units like centimetres.
Area
The area is the space inside a flat shape. For a rectangle, multiply length by width. Area is measured in square units, such as square centimetres. A 5 by 3 rectangle has an area of 15 square units.
Volume
The volume is the space inside a solid shape. For a cuboid, multiply length by width by height. Volume is measured in cubic units, such as cubic centimetres.
Try It
Measure a box at home. Work out its perimeter around the base, the area of the base and the volume of the whole box. Choosing the right unit and the right rule is the key to accurate answers.
