Countries and Capitals of the UK

Year 3 learn the four countries of the UK and their capital cities.

# Countries and Capitals of the UK

In Year 3 we learn that the United Kingdom is made up of four countries.

The Four Countries

The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each has its own history and traditions, and together they form one nation.

Capital Cities

Each country has a capital city. London is the capital of England and of the whole UK. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.

Finding Them on a Map

On a map of the UK, England is in the middle and south. Scotland is to the north. Wales is to the west. Northern Ireland is across the sea to the west. Finding each capital on the map helps you remember where each country is.

Why It Matters

Knowing the countries and capitals of the UK helps us understand where we live and talk about our country with others.
