Our Local Area
Year 1 explore their local area, learn simple map skills and identify human and physical features.
# Our Local Area
In Year 1 geography we start by looking at the place right around us.
What Is a Place?
A place is somewhere with a name, like a street, a village or a town. Every place has features, such as houses, shops, parks, roads and rivers. Looking closely helps us see what makes a place special.
Maps of Our Area
A map is a drawing of a place from above. A simple map of our area might show our home, the nearest road and a park. Maps help us find our way and understand where things are.
Human and Physical Features
Some features are made by people, like houses and roads. These are human features. Some are natural, like rivers, hills and trees. These are physical features. Both kinds make up our area.
Be a Geographer
Draw a simple map of your street. Label your home and two other places you know. Geographers notice and record the world around them.
