Stone Age to Iron Age

Year 3 explore how life in Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

# Stone Age to Iron Age

In Year 3 we travel back to the earliest times in Britain, when people used tools made of stone and metal.

The Stone Age

The Stone Age lasted a very long time. People were hunter-gatherers who moved from place to place finding food. They made tools and weapons from stone, bone and wood. Later they began to farm and settle in one place.

The Bronze Age

In the Bronze Age people learned to mix copper and tin to make bronze. Bronze was stronger than stone and could be shaped into better tools and pots. This made farming easier and life more settled.

The Iron Age

In the Iron Age people used iron, which was even stronger. They built hill forts for safety and grew more crops. Tribes lived in groups with leaders and began to trade with others.

Clues from the Past

We know about these times from things people left behind, like tools, pots and bones. These clues are called evidence, and historians piece them together like a puzzle.
