Animals and Their Needs

Year 1 learn the basic needs of animals and how to care for pets.

# Animals and Their Needs

In Year 1 science we learn what animals, including humans, need to stay alive.

The Three Basic Needs

All animals need water, food and air to survive. Without any one of these, an animal cannot live. Some animals need shelter too, to keep safe and warm.

Different Diets

Some animals eat only plants. We call them herbivores. Some eat only other animals. We call them carnivores. Some eat both, like humans, and we call them omnivores.

Caring for Pets

A pet depends on us for everything. A dog needs fresh water, suitable food, exercise and a safe place to sleep. Caring for a pet teaches us responsibility.

Looking and Learning

Watch an animal, such as a bird in the garden. What does it eat? Where does it drink? Where does it shelter? Noticing how animals meet their needs helps us understand the natural world.
