Money and Change

Year 2 learn to recognise coins, add money amounts and calculate change.

# Money and Change

In Year 2 we use money to practise adding and working out change.

Coins and Notes

We use pounds and pence. Coins include 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, one pound and two pounds. Knowing what each coin is worth helps you pay correctly.

Adding Money

To add money, line up the amounts and add as you would with normal numbers, keeping pounds and pence straight. Two items costing 34p and 27p come to 61p.

Giving Change

Change is the money you get back when you pay too much. If you pay 50p for something costing 30p, your change is 20p. You can count up from the cost to the amount paid to find the change.

Practise

Set up a little shop at home with priced items. Take turns being the shopper and the shopkeeper, adding up costs and giving the correct change.
