Analysing a Poem

Year 7 analyse poetic form, language and effect using evidence from the text.

# Analysing a Poem

In Year 7 we look closely at how a poem is built and what it makes us feel.

Form and Structure

A poem's form is its shape and pattern. It might have regular stanzas and rhyme, or it might be free with no set pattern. Structure is how the poem is organised, such as moving from a question to an answer.

Language Choices

Poets choose words carefully. Imagery paints pictures in the reader's mind using the senses. Similes compare using like or as. Metaphors say one thing is another, such as the moon was a silver coin.

Effect on the Reader

Every choice has an effect. A harsh sounding word can feel angry. A soft rhythm can feel calm. When you analyse, ask not just what the poet says but why they chose to say it that way.

Try It

Choose a short poem you like. Find one simile or metaphor, describe the image it creates and explain the effect. Supporting your points with quotes is the key to strong analysis.
