French: Greetings

Year 3 begin learning French with everyday greetings and polite phrases.

# French: Greetings

Learning a new language is like learning a new way to say hello to the world. French is spoken in many countries.

Saying Hello

Bonjour means hello. You can use it during the day. Salut is a casual hello for friends. To ask someone how they are, say Comment ca va?

Replies

You can reply Ca va bien for I am well, Comme ci comme ca for so so, or Ca va mal for not so good. A simple Bien, et toi? means Fine, and you?

Goodbye

To say goodbye, use Au revoir. In the evening you can say Bonsoir for good evening and Bonne nuit for good night.

Practise

Try greeting a family member in French. Say Bonjour, ask Comment ca va?, listen, then say Au revoir. Languages grow best when you speak them out loud.
