Keeping the Beat

Year 1 learn to find a steady beat and explore tempo and dynamics.

# Keeping the Beat

A beat is a steady pulse, like a heartbeat. In Year 1 we learn to feel the beat in music and move with it.

Finding the Pulse

Clap along with a song and you will feel a steady pulse. The pulse does not get faster or slower unless the music does. Tapping your foot is another good way to keep the beat.

Fast and Slow

Music can be fast or slow. The speed of the beat is called the tempo. A fast tempo makes us want to jump. A slow tempo can feel calm and sleepy.

Loud and Quiet

Music can also be loud or quiet. The loudness or softness is called the dynamics. A loud drum makes us feel excited. A quiet tune can feel gentle.

Play Along

Use a pan and a wooden spoon as a drum. Keep a steady beat while a favourite song plays. Try getting louder, then quieter, and notice how the feeling changes.
