Drawing Lines and Shapes
Year 3 use line, shape, texture and pattern to build more confident drawings.
# Drawing Lines and Shapes
In Year 3 we look more closely at how lines and shapes build a picture. Good drawing starts with careful looking.
Types of Line
Lines can be thick or thin, straight or curved, long or short. A line can show the edge of something or it can be a pattern on its own. Try drawing a page filled with different lines, one type in each box.
Shape and Form
Everything you draw can be broken into simple shapes. A house is a square with a triangle on top. A cat is made of ovals and triangles. Finding the simple shapes first makes drawing anything less scary.
Texture and Pattern
Texture is how something might feel if you touched it. You can show texture with marks, dots and crosses. Pattern is when marks repeat. Adding texture and pattern makes a flat drawing look more interesting.
Trying It Out
Choose an object in your room. Draw it using only straight lines first, then try again using only curved lines. Notice how the line choice changes the feeling of the picture.
