# What Is a Computer Program?
A computer program is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do. Just like a recipe tells a baker how to make a cake, a program tells a computer how to complete a task step by step.
Computers Need Clear Instructions
Computers are very fast, but they are not clever on their own. They only do exactly what we tell them. If our instructions are not clear, the computer cannot guess what we mean. This is why programmers learn to break tasks into small, simple steps.
Programs Are Everywhere
Programs are all around us. The games on a tablet, the timer on a microwave and the traffic lights on the way to school are all run by programs. Even the self checkout at the supermarket uses a program to know what you have scanned.
Be a Programmer at Home
You can practise being a programmer without a screen. Write a list of instructions for brushing your teeth or making a sandwich, then ask a grown up to follow them exactly. Watch what happens when a step is missing. This is how real programmers learn to write better instructions.
