Long Division

Master the formal written method of long division.

Long Division

Long division is a method for dividing larger numbers.

The Method

Divide 432 by 15:

  1. Divide: How many 15s go into 43? 2 (15 x 2 = 30)
  2. Multiply: 15 x 2 = 30
  3. Subtract: 43 - 30 = 13
  4. Bring down: Bring down the 2, making 132
  5. Repeat: How many 15s go into 132? 8 (15 x 8 = 120)
  6. Subtract: 132 - 120 = 12
  7. Remainder: 12 is less than 15, so it's the remainder

Answer: 432 / 15 = 28 remainder 12

Checking Your Answer

quotient x divisor + remainder = dividend 28 x 15 + 12 = 420 + 12 = 432. Correct!

Tips for Success
