What is a Percentage?

50% means 50 out of 100, which is the same as a half. 25% means 25 out of 100, which is the same as a quarter. 10% means 10 out of 100, which is the same as a tenth.

Finding Percentages of Amounts

  • 10% of 80 = 8

To find 1% of a number, divide by 100.

  • 1% of 200 = 2

To find other percentages, build from 10% and 1%:

  • 20% of 80 = 8 x 2 = 16
  • 5% of 80 = 8 / 2 = 4
  • 15% of 80 = 10% + 5% = 8 + 4 = 12
