The Roman Army

The Roman army was the most powerful army in the ancient world. Legionaries were full Roman citizens who signed up for 25 years. A legion had about 5,000 soldiers.

The Roman Invasion of Britain

• 55 BC: Julius Caesar first invaded Britain (but didn't stay)
• 43 AD: Emperor Claudius invaded and conquered Britain
• The Romans stayed for about 400 years

What the Romans Gave Us

1. Roads — they built over 8,000 miles of roads
2. Towns — London (Londinium), Bath, York
3. Writing — they introduced Latin
4. Baths — Roman baths had hot and cold rooms
5. Law — many of our laws come from Roman ideas

Hadrian's Wall

Built in 122 AD by Emperor Hadrian. It was 73 miles long and marked the northern edge of the Roman Empire.
