Addition Within 20

Adding numbers up to 20 is a key Year 1 maths skill.

Strategy 1: Counting On

Start with the bigger number and count on. Example: 7 + 3. Start at 7, count on 3: 8, 9, 10. Answer: 10.

Strategy 2: Number Line

Draw a number line and jump forward.

Strategy 3: Make 10 First

Example: 8 + 5. 8 needs 2 to make 10. Take 2 from 5: 8 + 2 = 10. 3 left: 10 + 3 = 13.
