  • Recognise and find ½ (half) of shapes and quantities
  • Recognise and find ¼ (quarter) of shapes and quantities

Introduction

A fraction is part of a whole. When we cut a pizza in half, each piece is ½. When we cut it into 4 equal pieces, each is ¼.

Activities

Activity 1: Pizza Fractions (15 minutes)

Draw or make a pizza. Cut it in half — show that ½ + ½ = 1 whole. Then cut into quarters.

Activity 2: Sharing Objects (15 minutes)

Get 8 objects (buttons, coins). Can you find half? (4) Can you find a quarter? (2) Try with 12, 20.

Activity 3: Fraction Wall (10 minutes)

Create a fraction wall using coloured paper — 1 whole, then halves, then quarters.

Challenge

What is ½ of 10? What is ¼ of 12? What is ¼ of 20?
