Geometry for Kids
Shapes, lines, angles and more — the building blocks of geometry, made simple.
What is geometry?
Geometry is the maths of shapes, lines and angles. Whenever you look at a ball, a window, a slice of pizza or a honeycomb — that's geometry! Let's learn the basics together.
2D shapes (flat shapes)
2D shapes are flat — they have length and width but no depth. They are made of sides (the straight edges) and corners (where sides meet).
3D shapes (solid shapes)
3D shapes are solid — they have length, width and depth. They have faces (flat sides), edges (where faces meet) and corners (vertices).
Lines
Angles
An angle is how much two lines turn at a corner. We measure angles in degrees (°).
Symmetry
A shape has line symmetry if you can fold it in half and both sides match perfectly.
The dashed orange line is the line of symmetry — both halves are mirror images.
Area & perimeter
Perimeter
The perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a shape.
Perimeter = 12 + 7 + 12 + 7 = 38
Area
The area is the space inside a shape — how much surface it covers.
Area = length × width = 12 × 7 = 84
Did you know?
- The word geometry comes from Greek words meaning "earth" and "measure".
- A circle is the only shape with no straight sides and no corners.
- Honeycomb is made of hexagons — bees use them because hexagons fit together with no gaps!
